Who says desserts are sinful and an extravagance? One can always have
healthy desserts and not feel guilty about it. One such dessert is the
very British apple crumble. After all, apples reduce the risk of many
cancers including colon, prostate and lung. Also, it contains fibre that
regulates bowel movements. Apples have also been credited with being
good for the heart, aiding in weight loss and stabilising cholesterol
levels. Considering the many benefits of this wonder fruit, a dessert
whose main ingredient is apples sounds like a real good idea.
Originally a British dessert, an apple crumble recipe contains stewed
fruit topped with a crumbly mixture of butter, flour and sugar. A baked
dish, this is a delicious end to a dinner. The best part of an apple
crumble is the oven crisped topping. Often served with either custard or
cream or ice cream, this dessert warms the heart and is perfect for a
chilly winter night. The best crumbles are made with apples though one
can also make it with other fruits like blackberry, peach, rhubarb,
gooseberry and plum. For the topping one can try rolled oats, ground
almonds or other nuts, broken biscuits, breakfast cereals and sour milk.
This lends variety to the dish and one is always kept guessing as to
what the topping will be the next time. A sprinkling of brown sugar on
top before baking gives it a caramalised taste. The best thing about
this dessert is that there is no one apple crumble recipe that one has
to follow. Innovation is the name of the game here and one can try out
different combinations of toppings to make it exotic. If planning an
elaborate evening, one can follow a rich apple crumble recipe and make
it with a base of pie that contains flour, fat and sugar. Otherwise one
can always go for a simpler option and use flour, margarine and sugar
for the topping.
The main ingredients of an apple crumble are the apple pieces that
need to be cooked first and a rough pastry. Of c ourse,
the pastry should have a liberal amount of butter in it. The fruit
should be stewed first with a little water till it is properly cooked.
Many people prefer using oats for texture and crispness. Moreover, if
the topping is made of oats, it does not become too soggy when it is
cooked along with the fruit. One can mix the oats with butter, almonds
and sugar and mix it thoroughly till crumbs are formed. After this, all
one needs to do is just bake the preparation. Isn’t it simple?
Here we give an easy and simple to follow apple crumble recipe that can
be enjoyed by about 8 to 10 people.
